Hail Mary, who stretched her biker leathers over her 6ft 5in frame, put her slingbacks in a rucksack, tossed her hair and stalked out a month or so ago. She is on a journey and won't be back for another month or so.
Mary started life as Kenneth, and her journey is the final stage of a longer journey from maleness to femaleness. The exact details of the surgical procedure she has recently undergone are not to be thought of but the scale of the mental traverse, the embracing and overcoming of obstacles, the determination to be and do otherness, is really rather admirable. It all adds up to a lot more than a snip here, a tuck there and Bob's your auntie.
God knows how many Marys there are and how they suffer. A few years ago a male couple argued about which of them should be reassigned and couldn't agree. So they both were. That really was mind-boggling.
