It all makes perfect sense. The Bank Governor goes to see the Queen after telling MPs that the country is bust and that no more stimuli can be afforded*; Wee Gordy Broon is back in the US (he was only there two minutes ago, for God's sake!) and the photo of him coming down the aeroplane steps brings to mind a busted dictator gone into exile; a Treasury minister is in disarray on Newsnight - the third such occurrence in a week or so, ie they're not even trying any more; the stand-ins are doing PMQs because Broon is too unstable for another drubbing from Dave and might actually crack up at the Box ... all that is needed is for Her Maj to call in the Chiefs of the General Staff and - hey! - politics becomes really interesting. Shortly all the televisions will go blank and every BBC Radio frequency will broadcast a tape loop of Lillibullero and the theme from The Archers played by the Band of the Coldstream Guards. Ah yes, Sir Compton sees it all... Perhaps all the Left-wing Commentariat could be herded to the foyer of the Guardian/Observer offices and mown down with machineguns.
*King was the first Governor to see the Queen during her reign. On his way out of the Palace, he spent a couple of minutes with the Duke of Edinburgh, who apparently asked him if he knew anything about the brakes on Gordy's official car.

ReplyDeleteNot knowing much about financial institutions, I was wondering how much of a president it is for King to get see Queenie (much more entertaining if it'd have been Miranda Richardson).
Who's idea it was for him to issue his statement at the time that he did?
Are people finally conspiring against the lunatic Brown?
Has King had enough of being shafted by the lunatic Brown?
Did Queenie ask to see him or did he ask to see her?
Has the penny finally dropped to the real powers-that-be that we really are in dire straits?
And Chris Mullin, author of A Very British Coup, has been unusually prominent in the media of late. Coincidence or, pauses for dramatic effect, just one of those things?
