Brown envelopes

How the minds of our rulers work. Mr Brown, in his letters to the targets of Labour smears, is far less condemnatory of the action than might be supposed. To Mr Cameron, upon whom rumours of an unfortunate social disease have been bestowed, the Prime Minister writes of his deep regret about "unsubstantiated claims", making no mention of outright untruths.

A funny way to shut down the story - but then perhaps he is not in earnest in his regret and would prefer the tittle-tattle to stay in the ether for a few days yet. What a truly awful man.
