Worn out and befuddled by the bank holiday political blood fest, there being not much else to report, swine flu being a damp squib (for now) and all. Hazel said this, but didn't mean that; Harriet said such a thing - or didn't; and Postman Pat said No, he wouldn't - but he knows he might have to. Oh, God, it is so confusing - like gnats buzzing. Broon said nothing, though Andrew Marr said he had sent the elbow-breaking squad to see Hazel.
Jack Straw - the better political operator, though probably less good than Alan Johnson at reaching beyond the core vote - said the internet was good for throwing up known unknowns, while newspapers offered unknown unknowns. This, providing the numbers can be made to add up, is what will keep them going - the capacity to surprise.
No surprises though from Baroness "Helena" Kennedy QC on Any Questions, the Saturday repeat listened to on the car radio while bimbling about in Nidderdale. The mask didn't so much slip as fall off and shatter while she huffed and puffed about how terrible the Tories would be, Cameron just ruling for the rich, the Tories complicit in the Iraqi morass (did they lie to Parliament and people, then?) etc. On and on it went, Red Clydesider ranting. Actually, just impotent ranting - but the stuff about the Tories ruling only for the rich was a bad mistake and both deeply negative and nasty. A very dismal performance which demeaned her and her party. Labour will have to offer something more than "it'll be terrible under them'uns" next year. What about the Vision Thing?
