Flicked through a copy of Chris Mullin's diaries, A View From The Foothills, over the weekend. He had a nice little number as a select committee chairman but was persuaded to give it up in favour of a none-job as a minister. Only read snatches but the whole thing is nicely done, not least a caption showing the author rather overwhelmed and soaking up the atmosphere while sitting on the front bench in PMQs. Blair turns to him and asks for the gist of an answer to an awkward question but such is Mullin's state of mind that he hadn't even heard the question. Blair - referred to as The Man in the book - let him go after the 2005 election.
Mullin is too nice and too independent to be a minister but is also a fine parliamentarian. A damn shame he isn't one of ours.
