Online doom

An interesting study by the journalism boffins at City University, the gist of which is that newspapers that drop print altogether in favour of online-only publishing can find themselves in very dire straits indeed. Yes, costs go down for sure, but revenue and readership go into freefall.

Sir Compton earnestly wishes that he had several copies of this study and a card for a barrier at Handcart Towers...there a five or six people within who need to be kicked and punched to the floor and made to choke on a scrunched up summary of the findings. The prospect of meting out such treatment - and Sir Compton has one odious, craven, self-serving (and quite rightly self-loathing) individual in mind - is highly pleasurable. But then, the powers that be there will no doubt have read the same report and be asking why they have been gulled into a strategy whose logical end point is online-only publication.

This game isn't over yet, and thank God someone has finally had the brains and guts to say so in the face of all the newspapers-are-dead bluster.
