To The Spread Eagle, Greenwich, for a fabulous feed. Chicken and asparagus terrine; halibut with scallops and bacon; creme brulee; very buttery chablis; devilishly delicious - and expensive - Hungarian pudding wine the name of which escapes Sir Compton's befuddled memory this morning. The dining room is hung with paintings of Greenwich, many of them rather good. One lovely view down the hill and over the Queen's House to the Isle of Dogs when it was no more than a wooded peninsula and hardly settled at all. Minxy maitre pushing bottled water at every opportunity and asking if we'd prefer to pay the service charge in cash but, hey, this is food as theatre and all good fun. Recommended.
