Chris Huhne, Kate Hoey and Peter Bottomley were put up to take questions from a panel for Channel 4 News last night. Hoey the best of them by far. Bottomley tried to nuance his answers and made himself seem foolish and Huhne was quite combative, becoming almost agitated when questioned in the matter of the trouser press. Yes, he needs to look smart for engagements but did not seem to understand that a) that doesn't mean the public should pick up the bill and b) saying he has paid it back is not the end of the matter, since it wouldn't be the end of the matter for civilians in such circs. Came across as arrogant or lacking emotional intelligence - a shame since over all none of the three was trying to defend the system. Huhne also openly critical of Gorbals Mick, most senior MP to be so. Later, Maragret Beckett had terrible trouble on Question Time - almost a Ceaucescu moment.
This morning's news: Shahid Malik has stepped down as a justice minister. First thoughts: is there more to come on him and how many more members of the govt will step down? At what point does the thing crumble completely?

ReplyDeleteI'm afraid my esteemed neighbours in Normanton, Outwood, or wherever else they are, will all go to the pub, tell eachother what a disgrace it is and that said MPs should be shot. They will then go to the ballot box and vote Labour, "cos mi father (pronounced with a short "a") allus voted Labour."
Here in Wakefield, Mary Creagh may have escaped the wrath of the media but at the last election she trashed David Hinchcliffe's majority from over 9,000 to 3,000. She may well be the last "Labour" MP to represent Wakefield, which, since the beginning of time has always been red. A most unbelievable achievement.
